We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Geography at The University of Sheffield (TUoS). The position is funded through the NERC highlight topic project PICANTE (Processes, Impacts, and Changes of ANTarctic Extreme weather’), led by Dr Julie Jones in the Department of Geography at TUoS, involving a number of partner institutions.

The PICANTE project aims to transform understanding of the characteristics and drivers of Antarctic extreme weather events (AEWEs), disentangle the roles of human influence and natural climate variability in changes to AEWE and their drivers, and to to predict future events and their impacts on Antarctic climate and ice. AEWEs have global implications, through potential detrimental impacts on ice shelf stability, leading to ice mass loss and global sea level rise. Obtaining improved projections of how AEWEs and their knock-on impacts on Antarctic climate and ice may be affected by climate change is hence crucially important.

As part of this project you will use reanalysis and satellite data, apply standard statistical methods in combination with machine learning based methods to understand the large-scale and/or remote meteorological drivers of AEWEs. You will work closely with the project team to advance the understanding of the relative contributions of the chain of drivers of these events across different scales, and apply these understanding to assess the performance of state-of-the-art CMIP6 GCMs to capture these drivers. Using novel applications of event attribution framework you will undertake attribution studies of selected AEWEs to decipher the roles of natural and human forcings, and explore the thermodynamic vs. dynamic contributions to the changes of these events under different warming scenarios using large ensembles.

You should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in a closely related area, with strong expertise and high skills in analysing large datasets (such as climate model outputs), detection and attribution, and climate model evaluation. You will join an interdisciplinary team, and work in a world-leading team of scientists from the Universities of Sheffield, Lancaster, Lincoln, Exeter, Imperial College, the British Antarctic Survey and the UK Met Office.

We have an exciting opportunity in the Information School at the University of Sheffield for an excellent Postdoctoral Researcher keen to develop their research interests in Chemoinformatics. The appointee will join the Chemoinformatics Research Group headed by Prof Val Gillet. The group works in partnership with pharmaceutical and other chemical companies, as well as other academic departments in the University of Sheffield including the Department of Chemistry. The main areas of focus within the group are the development and evaluation of virtual screening methods including 2D and 3D similarity searching; applications of AI and machine learning in drug discovery; applications of knowledge graphs in drug discovery; and de novo design whereby novel compounds are designed to fit various constraints.
You will undertake research in chemoinformatics in one of the above areas in consultation and collaboration with Professor Val Gillet. You will also contribute to the Chemoinformatics group including helping the group to maintain its strong network of contacts and collaborators in Industry. You will also develop research articles for submission to international peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly ambitious, flexible and committed Post-doctoral Researcher to join our team to investigate pathophysiological mechanisms in Gluten Ataxia. You will join an internationally recognised research group in a vibrant and stimulating environment within the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (http://sitran.org). You will have a PhD in a neuroscience related subject (or equivalent experience), an interest in gluten ataxia research and experience of working with human samples, ideally human tissue, including histological techniques. You will have an ability to work within a group and to liase with collaborators. You will also be able to contribute to the supervision of students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Gluten related neurological disorders research is a strategic priority for the Neuroscience Institute and part of the Biomedical Research Centre themes. AMRC Castings have an exciting opportunity for a well organised, self-motivating individual to work within the maintenance team.

The facility boasts a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipment covering all aspects of the manufacture of castings, including 3D additive pattern and mould machines, investment moulding cells, melting furnaces (Resistance, Induction, Vacuum Induction, Induction Skull and Vacuum Arc Re-melting), heat treatment facilities (both vacuum and air) and a wide variety of finishing technologies.

You will work alongside our two highly experienced maintenance engineers. This will give you the opportunity to vastly increase your knowledge and experience in a large-scale industrial facility. The responsibilities if the role will involve the co-ordination of compliance activities (Insurance inspections, LEV testing and Water compliance) as well as supporting the maintenance of the facility on day-to-day activities.

It is required that some relevant experience and knowledge is held by you; experience working in a hot metal environment and qualifications in industrial electronics. Equally knowledge of legislative requirements are also highly desirable, i.e. LOLER inspection, LEV inspection, Pressure vessel inspection, COSSH management, etc.

As part of the AMRC, the castings facility represents a complete multi-alloy capable foundry facility, ranging from cast iron & steel through non-ferrous alloys and reactive alloys. This world leading facility comprises of a wide variety of equipment capable of the full process of manufacturing castings for a wide variety of industries. This will give you the ability to gain experience on a very broad range of equipment applicable to many industrial sectors.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Education Development Manager (Technology) to join our team. You will be responsible for leading and delivering multiple projects and initiatives related to digital education provision, with a focus on digital technologies and learning environments (physical and virtual). You will work closely with staff, students, and other stakeholders to identify needs, translate requirements, and develop and implement solutions.
