The Opportunity:

The School of Engineering seeks to appoint four Research Associates in Causal AI. These Research Associate positions will contribute to the EPSRC funded CHAI AI Hub and the VIOS group at the University of Edinburgh.



We are looking for enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers to join our team led by Prof. Sotirios Tsaftaris (https://vios.science) in the prestigious high-profile CHAI AI Hub [https://www.chai.ac.uk] funded by EPSRC to help us develop new causal AI methods as applied to a variety of healthcare applications co-created within an ecosystem of partners and stakeholders. Our aspiration is to change the future of healthcare precisely because we devise better AI methods rooted in causal.



Areas of particular interest include generative models, representation learning, causal predictive models.



The candidate will:

join a dynamic, international team of several postdocs and students working in AI at the University of Edinburgh –a powerhouse in artificial intelligence, engineering and medicine;
contribute to a national center of excellence where deep learning and AI meets real healthcare data directly addressing industry and societal needs; and
visit and interact with academic partners at Imperial College London, Kings College London, University College London, The University of Manchester and The University of Exeter as well as large body of industry, policy and government stakeholders (more than 50)
interact with more than 80 affiliated researchers and 8 PDRAs and 11 PhD students of CHAI.


This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working weekly arrangement subject to planning.

Our client, a leading homelessness charity based in London, are looking for a Homeless Assessment and Resettlement Worker to work in a busy homeless assessment hub in west London. The service aims to assess and resettle clients experiencing homelessness with varied levels of support required, from the very complex with multiple needs, to those who have recently become homeless with a lower-level of support needed to progress them into an independent tenancy. We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Geography at The University of Sheffield (TUoS). The position is funded through the NERC highlight topic project PICANTE (Processes, Impacts, and Changes of ANTarctic Extreme weather’), led by Dr Julie Jones in the Department of Geography at TUoS, involving a number of partner institutions.

The PICANTE project aims to transform understanding of the characteristics and drivers of Antarctic extreme weather events (AEWEs), disentangle the roles of human influence and natural climate variability in changes to AEWE and their drivers, and to to predict future events and their impacts on Antarctic climate and ice. AEWEs have global implications, through potential detrimental impacts on ice shelf stability, leading to ice mass loss and global sea level rise. Obtaining improved projections of how AEWEs and their knock-on impacts on Antarctic climate and ice may be affected by climate change is hence crucially important.

As part of this project you will use reanalysis and satellite data, apply standard statistical methods in combination with machine learning based methods to understand the large-scale and/or remote meteorological drivers of AEWEs. You will work closely with the project team to advance the understanding of the relative contributions of the chain of drivers of these events across different scales, and apply these understanding to assess the performance of state-of-the-art CMIP6 GCMs to capture these drivers. Using novel applications of event attribution framework you will undertake attribution studies of selected AEWEs to decipher the roles of natural and human forcings, and explore the thermodynamic vs. dynamic contributions to the changes of these events under different warming scenarios using large ensembles.

You should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in a closely related area, with strong expertise and high skills in analysing large datasets (such as climate model outputs), detection and attribution, and climate model evaluation. You will join an interdisciplinary team, and work in a world-leading team of scientists from the Universities of Sheffield, Lancaster, Lincoln, Exeter, Imperial College, the British Antarctic Survey and the UK Met Office.

The post holder will be encouraged to develop their own research interest/project, which could lead to a higher degree (MD/PhD), and to write grant applications to secure additional external funding for such a project or other research projects conducted in the Unit. Support a range of clinical research studies within their clinical expertise being conducted at the Trust. Clinical Responsibilities Work in conjunction with the Senior Research Nurse/Clinical Trials Coordinator to manage a caseload of patients, whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professionals to ensure service delivery. Assist in screening patients suitable for entry into clinical trials. This may include attending clinics and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. Identify patients suitable for entry into clinical trials by attending clinics (screening notes/consultant referral) and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. With other members of the healthcare team, ensure patients are fully informed prior to entry in any clinical trial programme. Assist in consenting, randomising, allocating of treatment of patients. Act as a resource and support to patients and their relatives, explaining practical aspects of clinical trials, assisting and supporting local nursing teams. Support the administration of trial drugs (commensurate with education and training), be aware of and report any unusual side effects, in association with local nursing teams. Maintain adequate patients records and ensure all relevant information is documented in the patients medical and nursing notes. Responsible for accurate completion of Case Report Forms (CRFs). Responsible for the collection, co-ordination and computerisation of data generated from the clinical trials. Provide continuity of care for patients and their carers throughout the trial programme. Provide specific advice and support as appropriate. Implement and adhere to the principles of GCP (Good Clinical Practice) as set out in the Clinical Trials Regulations. If appropriately trained, keep up to date with current practices for cannulation, phlebotomy and care of patients with Central Venous Access lines. Act as a resource for liver based research. Portfolio Management and Development Assist in the review of trial protocols and identify resource implications for the site. Set up and maintain the TMF/ISF with essential documents. Help organise initiation meetings. Liaise with and assist the medical team/sponsor organisation in - on-study treatment and follow up of patient Ensure CRFs are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Ensure SAEs are recorded and reported in accordance with the protocol and/or sponsors SOP. For network trials, ensure that accrual data is uploaded onto the NIHR CRN portal using the EDGE clinical trials database. Collect and provide information to allow for invoices to be raised for payments where appropriate Liaise with other departments and wards at the site/s, in order to promote a good working environment, integration of research within and open channels of communication. Inform appropriate medical personnel and departments of portfolio of clinical trials. Participate in the presentation of research findings within the Clinical Research Network South London and outside agencies as appropriate. Report adverse incidents and near misses via the Trusts online incident reporting form. Coordinate multi-centre trials (where appropriate). Together with the Kings Health Partners Clinical Trials Office (KHP CTO): Ensure all relevant documents and approvals are in place at each site prior to subject recruitment. Liaise with participating sites, identifying key staff and updating them on trial processes/changes to the protocol and ensuring centres are able to comply with the study protocol. Help conduct initiation meetings (if required) Collect data from sites, raise data queries and ensure data queries are resolved. Training and Development Attend the KHP CTO, NIHR CRN and CRN South London training programmes and other relevant education and training days/programmes as appropriate. Attend investigator/initiation meetings and conferences when required. Maintain awareness of current advances in hepatology treatments, research and nursing practice and use this knowledge to maintain high standards of care for Nurse trial patients. Disseminate research by assisting in the preparation of posters/research papers for meetings, conferences and publications. Also circulate trial information and carry our presentations locally.
