Purpose of role:
Preparing a variety of dishes on a daily basis, you’ll ensure the needs of children with special diets, cultural and religious needs are met.
You’ll be involved in planning menus and will order supplies and control budgets when necessary. Above all else, you’ll ensure the very highest standards of hygiene and health & safety are met.
You’ll need a recognised catering qualification such as City and Guilds and a current Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent.
A Criminal Records Bureau Check will be undertaken.
1. Job Purpose
1.1 To provide meals, special diets, cultural and religious requirements, to a multi-cultural group of young people (and nominated staff supervising young people during mealtimes in the unit).
1.2 To maintain a standard of hygiene in keeping with Health and Safety Guidelines and Hygiene Regulations.
2. Duties & Responsibilities
2.1 To prepare meals in accordance with daily menus, specifically concentrating on special diets, cultural requirements, young people’s/children’s choice, etc.
2.2 To ensure Health and Safety Standards and Hygiene Regulations are observed in the kitchen and dining areas, reporting defective machinery or equipment to the Support Services Manager.
2.3 To be the lone person responsible for the cooking of a lunch-time meal and preparing tea and should communicate any ideas, suggestions and feedback from young people via the communication book, which is managed by the Senior Cook who has responsibility for menu planning, ordering and strategic developments.
2.4 To undertake administrative duties as required, for example, completing monitoring records to ensure appropriate kitchen standards are complied with.
2.5 To ensure all meals are presented to a high standard creatively.
2.6 To participate in the preparation and provision of buffets for celebrations, special events and occasions.

2.7 To contribute towards future developments of meals provision.
2.8 To ensure all cooking implements are cleaned and stored away securely at all times. The Assistant Cook is required to clean the kitchen including equipment, kitchen floor, wall, sills, worktops, cookers and all other equipment used to fulfil the role.
2.9 To attend staff meetings or supervision at a mutually agreed and convenient weekday once a month. There will be a paid period of two hours to cover this including travel time.
2.10 To receive monthly supervision (within the Directorate’s framework) from a senior member of staff identified by the Registered Manager. Your work would be regularly supervised, or your supervisor would leave you to work within established guidelines, subject to scrutiny. At times you would also be expected to plan your own work to ensure you are meeting the defined objectives. As part of your induction you would be advised regarding the level of supervision you would receive.
2.11 To undertake other duties at a similar level of responsibility as directed by the Support Services Manager.
2.12 To undertake training as necessary.
Experience
(Relevant work and other
experience)
Preparation and cooking of meals in a domestic or industrial setting.
Experience of cooking for people from different cultural backgrounds.
Skills & Ability
e.g. written communication skills, dealing with the public etc.
Ability to provide a high standard of hygiene especially in the kitchen.
Ability to keep monitoring records.
Knowledge of needs of children of various cultures.
Knowledge of nutritious foods and well balanced diets.
Knowledge of required Health and Safety standards.
Ability to work on own initiative.
